This summer we made an inspiring visit to Itacitrus, our organic Fairtrade limes producer in the beautiful province of Bahia, Brazil. At their farm Nossa Senhora de Bonsucesso, no less than 1,200 hectares of organic limes are grown. The farm is an example of how large-scale organic cultivation can indeed be successful.
Owner Waldyr Promecia and his team, led by manager Andre, have created a model organisation. They produce their own compost on a large scale and have their own factory for mycorrhiza fungi and micro-organisms that support soil and lime vitality. This allows them to offer high-quality Fairtrade organic limes year-round.
Itacitrus not only ensures sustainable cultivation, but also actively contributes to local community development. Workers are united in the association ASBON, which is involved in management. They also receive regular training on safety, human rights and leadership.
The Fairtrade premium ASBON receives allows it to invest in community initiatives, such as a vegetable garden for healthy meals and a sewing workshop in the local village, where the work clothes for Itacitrus workers are made.
These initiatives not only promote the economic development of the local community. The distribution and spending of the Fairtrade premium also teaches employees important democratic skills in making joint choices that go beyond personal interest.
With Itacitrus' Fairtrade limes, you buy quality, sustainable products that benefit the local community in Brazil. Ask your account manager for more information on these delicious Fairtrade limes and Itacitrus' impact!
